Route Reads & Throws

Last updated Aug 27, 2026

Play quarterback, not route roulette.

  • Throw the slant on time — before the receiver crosses your face. A late slant is a timing trick, not a read.
  • Crossers and drags are reads, not outlets. Work them inside a progression instead of taking the same free eight yards every dropback. Mesh is built as a two-drag read — run it as designed.
  • Let the play develop. On a called dropback, give the concept a beat before you take off. Bailing at the snap every play turns a passing game into a quarterback run game.
  • Pre-snap adjustments fix a look; they do not script an answer. Hot-routing your way out of every coverage you diagnose is not quarterback play. Blocking assignments are always free.
  • Catch the ball like a receiver. The possession-catch toggle is for securing a ball in traffic, not for farming contested throws outside the numbers.
